It is obvious if you read the first verse to [ccnscp87 misquotes the poem]:

Because I could not stop for death --
He kindly stopped for me --
The car stopped, but only us --
And immortality.

Riding in the car, "Because I could not stop for death -"
is the death in person, and creates the narrator - a sign of Dickinson.

Have you ever tried to read the poem? The answer is in the first stanza, by God!

Because I could not stop for death
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality
